Hip Pain

…THE BIGGEST JOINT

The pelvis is the biggest hinge in the body and in the west we rarely use it correctly. The correct use of the hips is demonstrated below by people who live in a culture that requires them to move in the way their body has evolved to move.

So, it’s no wonder we have so many hip replacements and hip pain issues coming through the studio looking for answers. Instead of hinging from our hips to bend down we usually get this range of movement from other parts of the body that weren’t developed to move that much. Usually the spine. That coupled with the fact that we have very little strength building movements in our lives means all the joints are put under a stress that the muscles can’t support.

HOW ARE WE SUPPOSED TO HINGE THEN?

This giant joint is at the heart of all human movement and that’s why the muscles around it are referred to as the “core”. Yet so little of what we even do in gyms involves this group.

Stabilising the pelvis is at the core of every Pilates class. Understanding how to use pelvic neutral – have a look at the video below to see how to do it – will help you build the muscles you need to strengthen your core and help your hips stay healthy!

THE PELVIS IS THE LITERAL CORE

Weak pelvis/hip strength is the reason you get knee pain, it’s the reason your lower back doesn’t sit right and you constantly have back pain. Shoulders also can’t sit correctly if their base is misaligned. Which is why I start with the pelvis with a client suffering from neck tension and why the pelvis and hip strength are at the core of all our classes.

It’s this personal look at each client’s life and the specific changes we can make for them to see an improvement in their body health that are at the heart (core) of how we work at Leith Pilates. When you start with us we talk through your life and you get the information and support that’s correct for you. Andy has helped people through, and even helped them avoid, hip replacements, so whether you’re wanting to stop that knee pain on your runs or recover from your hip surgery, hip strength is where you want to go.
